Hamilton Joseph "Hamp" Rainbolt was born November 11, 1832 in Lawrence County, Indiana, the first child of Joseph and Nancy (Gray) Rainbolt. His parents settled in Section 25, Twp 67 N, R 14 W, of Schuyler County, where his father, Joseph was granted a land patent for 40 acres September 1, 1856.

Hamp was a farmer, and met and married his life long partner, Cyrene Jane Newland, a daughter of Isaac A. and Hannah Jane (Hicks) Newland, on the 14th of November, 1861 in Schuyler County, MO. Together he and his wife were the parents of 10 children:
